HCI

Information about the HCI course during the COVID-19 university shutdown

Both the lectures and the project continue in HCI, of course with respect of the conditions set by the French Ministry. Today, we are totally confined at homes, which makes impossible to work together side by side. As a consequence, we continue remotely, with the interdiction to meet, to recruit people for interviews, etc. You MUST absolutely work remotely in your projects groups as well as with the teachers team. Be sure, we will do our best to make us available as much as you need. Feel free to contact us for any question, any suggestion, any problem. Also keep in mind that health is our first priority. Please take care of yourself and of your families and friends.

  • For any question about HCI as a whole: Gaëlle Calvary, Gaelle.Calvary@imag.fr, 06 31 77 86 71
  • For specific questions about one of the lectures: François Bérard or Gaëlle Calvary, depending on the part of the lecture
  • For questions about the project: Mina Alipour (Skype id Mina.alipour88)

Lectures during university shutdown

Lecture of Gaëlle Calvary on March 19

Yesderday I gave a lecture remotely using Zoom, but it did not work so well. As a consequence, I suggest the following way of working: I put the slides on line, together with an audio recording of the lecture, which makes it possible for you to listen or relisten at any time, depending on the specific clarifications you need. As support, you have:

  • The slides : 7-GC-Session4-en.pdf Δ.
  • A video (slides+audio): https://youtu.be/d8K6fpTbaao
  • Myself :-) Do not hesitate to contact me either by email (Gaelle.Calvary@imag.fr) with "Question about the lecture" as subject, or by phone (06 31 77 86 71). I will put the set of Questions-Answers online in the FAQ section on the wiki, to share the useful discussions.

Please take care of yourself, do not take risks. Thank you so much for the nice sessions we shared together. I keep myself available for you and wish you the best for the coming days.

Lecture of François Bérard on March 26th

 slides video (167Mb) Δ

I am planning to use discord app; which worked well for other faculties. The application is a bit complicated, it may be useful to install it a bit in advance and get familiar with it. You have to download and install the discord app on your PC or tablet computer: the web application does not seem to allow receiving the video stream for the slides. Please use your names (first, last) as id so that we know who says what. The lecture will be on "francois_berard's server" at the following address:

 https://discordapp.com/invite/33dgDkU

For those who can, I propose that we meet on this server tuesday 24th, 5p just to check that you can connect, receive the audio, the slides, etc. The server will be active also before the lecture for tests.

Project

As you all know, we have faced a worldwide crisis known as Covid-19, which has subsequently affected the course and the project we were doing together. To maintain the quality of the project, we will continue working on the projects, so please find alternative options for doing the project together.

Project timeline :

The timeline will not change, and we can work remotely together.

Course time:

During the course time on Thursdays, I expect to have 15 minutes talk with each group to make sure we will achieve a good quality of work, and you can clarify the roles in your group in this talk. Moreover please send a document on your progress every Wednesday mornings. This document is not anything official; the aim here is to give you more feedback on your work and make every phase more clear for you to follow. Please follow this rule. Please send me an email to specify your desired time slot for us to discuss your work.

Getting in touch:

We still stay in touch to make progress in the project: You can send an email regarding any questions to Mina.alipour@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr anytime during the week, and I’ll try to answer as soon as possible. To get in touch during the course time on Thursdays, please contact me on my skype id: Mina.alipour88.

Defense timeline:

  • As of the current difficult situation, we are facing,we cancel the experimental evaluation part of your project, and replace the defense with a remote session and/or the submission of additional deliverables (documents/videos/slides/etc.).
  • I would prefer a conference call along with a document submission, to have the opportunity to discuss with you in-depth. But, in this complicated situation with possibly low Internet access, I am totally flexible, open to the preferences of each group: you could replace your defense by sending a document, and/or a recorded video.
  • I would like you to finish the project between May 4 and May 7. So please tell me by email before April 17 the format you select, and in case of a conf call, please reserve a date and time for doing your defense. Obviously the first group who has sent an email on their time and date would have the time. In practice, I would appreciate getting the additional supports one week before the remote discussion. Thereby I can raise questions to you before the defense, you could focus on during the discussion. Whatever the format you go for, the following elements must be clear: the purpose of the experimental evaluation given your problem analysis and design decisions, the prototype you built for, the evaluation protocol you created for, the method you would have applied to analyze the observations and take a decision for the future. Again, you do not run the experimental evaluation! You stop just before, because of the crisis. To demonstrate your prototype, you can make a video showing you (not participants!) in action.
  • Please consider page limit for your prototype description and evaluation part is 8 pages

Good luck everyone and stay safe!
